Rooftop Decks - Getting Ready for summer

One of the best things about summer is spending time outdoors with family and friends. The days are longer and the nights are warm and it all makes for a perfect opportunity to spend time outside on the deck. One trend that has only been growing in popularity are rooftop decks. Rooftop decks allow for great views, additional space for friends and family and even the perfect place for gardens. Before you consider adding a rooftop deck however, there are some things to consider.  You’ll first need to get your rooftop analysed by a professional engineer in order to determine if your rooftop is capable of sustaining a deck. Things to consider including supporting the weight of structures, plantings, and soil as well as the water availability and how wastewater runoff will be able to be managed. If you already have a rooftop deck, you can also double check with a professional engineer to determine how much more additional weight will be able to be handled. Once this is determined, it will be able to better determine what additions you can make to your rooftop space.  A popular option for rooftop decks are gardens. An easy way to add some greenery on your rooftop is to simply add a variety of potted plants as opposed to adding something like a ground level garden which generally required 4 to 8 inches of soil in for plants to have their roots properly anchored. With potted plants you can go small or large by even adding potted trees for extra shade. Another option for your roof deck is of course to add furniture. From comfortable couches to benches, there is a wide variety of options you can add to your rooftop deck. Some things to consider include the size and shape of your deck as well the look and feel you’re going for. If you have enough space, adding a grill to your rooftop deck is also a great idea that will really complete your deck for summer festivities.
