Five Warning Signs You Need a New Deck

Having a deck in your yard adds something extra to your home. It’s a great place to hang with friends and family, or it gives you a place to sit, relax, get some fresh air, and enjoy the sounds of nature. Most decks were built to last for a long time, but since they are exposed to the elements, they will need to be repaired or replaced eventually. A deck will last longer if it’s had balcony waterproofing, but it still won’t last forever. Below are five warning signs that you need a new deck.

1. Your Deck Is No Longer Up to Code

Depending on the age of your home and when your deck was built, it could be out of date. Deck codes are put into place to keep people safe, and if your deck was made a while ago, it might no longer be up to code. Calling in a professional to see if your deck conforms to the latest rules and regulations is in your best interest. If it doesn’t, this is a warning sign that your deck needs to be replaced.

2. The Floorboards Are Unstable

If you’re walking across your deck and you notice that some of the floorboards are loose, wobbly, or sink when you step on them, then this is a sign that you need a new deck. If you ignore this issue, it will only get worse. Should the board break completely, this could lead to you, a family member, or a friend getting injured.

3. The Railings Are Loose

The railings are placed around your deck to keep people and pets from falling over the side. Most of the time, they are incredibly stable and do their job. However, if you notice that some of the vertical supports are broken or missing or if the railing moves when you touch it or lean on it, then it’s time to get your deck replaced. This is a safety hazard, and you want to keep everyone on your deck from falling.

4. The Posts Are Damaged

Your deck posts are an integral part of your deck, and you need them in good shape to ensure that the structure won’t collapse. Take a moment to inspect these items, and if you notice places where it looks like the wood is rotting or you see mold growth, you need to get a new deck as soon as possible.

5. You Don’t Feel Safe

When it comes to signs that you need a new deck, some obvious ones will let you know it’s time to call a professional. However, if you feel uncomfortable or aren’t sure if you need a new deck, then have a professional do an inspection. You should be able to use your deck whenever you want and feel comfortable at the same time. Getting a new one might be just what you need to feel that way.

The deck on your home extends your living space and gives you a place to hang out to enjoy sunsets or have get-togethers with family and friends. To keep everyone safe, don’t ignore the warning signs that let you know it’s time to get a new deck.
