When it comes to waterproofing, not all deck coats are the same. In fact, while it’s extremely important to get your deck waterproofed, there are some things to consider before getting started. Here are 3 important things to consider for waterproof deck coatings.

The first thing that will help narrow down your decision is whether you have a wood or a concrete deck. A wood deck also needs to be protected from UV rays in addition to moisture. You can also pick coats that are stained or tinted, which will add a different hue to your deck. Concrete decks have different needs but they still need to be protected from moisture. If you have a concrete deck that you are getting waterproofed, you can also create new additions to your surface. For example, many waterproof coatings can be finished to look like a variety of materials such as stone, tile and more.

If you have a concrete deck, the next thing you want to do is figure out the texture of the floor.  Some coats will leave your concrete floor looking and feeling smooth. These coats will be easy to keep clean and can have a modern feel to it. Your other option is the more traditional textured finish. A major pro to the textured finish is that it is more budget friendly and still looks quite nice. Especially when you can get the finished product colored. The third thing to keep in mind is that you can add color to your finished concrete. Some things to think about when deciding a color is the color of your home, the color of other objects in your backyard such as fountains or barbeque pits for example. Common colors to tint your concrete include gray, red, taupe or tan, and green.
