All deck owners know that in order to keep your deck looking like new, regular maintenance is needed. While getting your deck waterproofed may be one of the most important and helpful things you can do for your deck, this doesn’t entirely leave you off the hook. Regular maintenance throughout the year will keep your deck looking like new as well as keeping it in good shape. Here are some things you can do to maintain your deck looking like new.

At least once or twice a year be sure to wash your deck. If you need deck maintenance in Los Angeles make sure to check West Coast Waterproofing.   When you leave a deck unwashed, you are simply invited mildew and mold to form, which of course can lead to dry rot. Not only does rot weaken the structural integrity of your deck, it can also be costly to fix. Be sure to remove all the debris from the surface of your deck. After that, remove all items from the deck and give it a good sweep. Then, once choosing an appropriate cleanser for your deck, follow the directions and wash the surface of your deck. Mid year, inspect your deck for any signs of repair. This means to be on the lookout for any signs of rot - wood panels may be spongy, cracked or warped. Be sure to check all joists, posts and beams and make sure they are not loose. See if any handrails needs to be tightened or have screws replaced if they are rusty for example.

In addition to these regular maintenance tips, be sure to get your deck waterproofed. While they make products for homeowners to waterproof decks themselves, there is no substitute for professional waterproofing. Professionals will know what is best for your type of deck and with a professional, you can rest easy knowing your deck will be properly waterproofed. A properly waterproofed deck means protection from future rot and expensive costs down the line.
